Hospice and Healing

The Hospice Group is also the Caring Committee.Since many of you have made generous donations to our Hospice fund we now have money available to give support to other caring committees of Temple Sholom. Recently we gave money to Mitzvah Meals to cover the cost of all of the paper goods to feed the homeless for the entire year. Our Hospice Group is always ready, willing, able —and glad to be able to help out where needed.

We are a group of trained Temple Sholom members, volunteers who try to alleviate the stress that accompanies a serious illness that extends over time. Support can range from obtaining books for grieving family members (including children), listening, cooking a meal or giving the caregiver time off. We can’t help you if we don’t know you are in need of our services.

Our sources of referral are members of our Temple family (like yourself), and the clergy. Should you or anyone you know need our care and assistance, please contact Barbara Smilk (610-353-0840) or Amy Berkowitz (610-353-8077).

Mitzvah Meals

If you're looking for a fulfilling volunteer opportunity this new year, please consider helping Mitzvah Meals!

Those we feed at the Eastern Delaware County Life Center are always happy to see members of our Temple, and are grateful to have our hot meals of pasta, meatballs, salad, and more. Their smiles and gratitude will leave you smiling the rest of the night!

Mitzvah Meals is starting a new schedule for 2008! To join, and for more information, contact Howard Cylinder at HCylinder@msn.com or Emily Kahn-Freedman at ekahnfreedman@gmail.com.

Halachic Organ Donor Society (HODS)

The HOD Society is a non-profit organization that saves lives by encouraging organ donation from Jews to the general population (including non-Jews). It educates Jews about the halachic and medical issues surrounding organ donation; it offers a unique organ donor card that allows people to choose options that are in accordance with their particular halachic belief; it offers a living kidney donor program.

Over the last five years, the Halachic Organ Donor Society has:

  • helped facilitate hundreds of transplants, including that of Moshiko Sharon
  • performed a kiddush Hashem by changing people's perception about Jews (CNN, WABC TV, The NY Times)
  • delivered more than 170 lectures educating more than 15,000 people
  • recruited over 170 Rabbis, up from 3, to carry organ donor cards
  • created a dozen Rabbinic video-testimonials in suppoprt of organ donation
  • made available over 170 articles on organ donation and Jewish law
  • placed over 60 editorials, articles, and letters-to-the-editor
  • had an impact half way around the world: Australian Jewish News

Mitzvah Corps

The Mitzvah Corps is starting a new yearly rotation schedule beginning January. If you would like to give a little time to help out with the more “acute”, shorter-term needs of those sitting shiva, new mothers, the sick, or those in need of transportation or meals, please call Ilene Brouda (610-853-2459). This commitment would only place you on call for a two week period during the year, for whatever needs may arise in that time frame.
