Religious Curriculum

Sunday Religious School

Grades K through 6

Our Sunday religious school is based upon a graded curriculum beginning with Kindergarten and continuing through Sixth grade. The curriculum is designed to offer students a broad understanding of the various facets of their Jewish heritage including: God, holidays, Bible, Israel, ethics, history, Hebrew language, music, literature and culture.

Our second through sixth grades participate in the "CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life" curriculum sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism. The CHAI curriculum utilizes "real life" learning opportunities connecting our ancient teachings to the students' everyday lives. The Sunday morning experience is enhanced by our Dor l'dor - Family Education program which gives families an opportunity to learn and explore together at various times throughout the school year. Students attend one of the two 90-minute sessions, beginning at 9:30 AM or 11:30 AM.

T.S. High

Grade 7-9

Students in seventh, eighth and ninth grades attend the Monday evening program from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. Students are encouraged to arrive at 6:30pm for a pizza dinner and to socialize with their friends. The T.S. High school year is divided into quarters. Seventh graders engage in core curriculum during the first two quarters. Students in eighth and ninth grade spend the first quarter of the year with their own grade engaged in the core curriculum.

After completing the core curriculum, students choose from a variety of "electives" that allow them to chart their own course of their Jewish education. Topics for our electives change from year to year and are based on the interests of the students.

Mid-Week Hebrew School

Grade 3-6

The goal of our Hebrew program is reading accuracy and fluency within the framework of a prayer oriented curriculum. In addition, students will develop a personal relationship with the prayers and blessings used during Shabbat and holiday observances. By doing so, we strive to enable every child to feel comfortable in worshipping not only in services and celebrations here at Temple Sholom but at any Reform service anywhere in the world.

We offer four years of Hebrew. The Alef year teaches the Hebrew alphabet and vowels as well as phonetic reading skills. The Bet, Gimel and Dalet years continue the refinement of reading skills. In addition, each year after Alef targets a defined set of prayers and blessings surrounding the holidays, Shabbat liturgy and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah service. Our program is enhanced by our bi-monthly tefillah (prayer) experience where students put into practice what they are learning in the classroom. Our students in Bet, Gimmel and Dalet have the opportunity to learn Torah cantillation with our cantillation "intern". Hebrew school meets one day a week with two options for class time: Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00pm; Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30pm.

Dor L'dor Family Education

At Temple Sholom we believe that the cornerstone of Jewish education is the home and the family. A partnership must exist between school and home and opportunities must be made available for parents to become active in both their own learning and their child's learning.

At Temple Sholom we offer many opportunities for families to learn within the walls of our synagogue and extend that learning and practice into their homes. Family learning opportunities include our "Heirloom Series" where families create ritual objects such as copper menorahs, etched glass Kiddush cups and Passover tablecloths, just to name a few. Families also have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays together including the culinary aromas of special holiday foods. in such programs as "Peer Pressure for Parents of Teens".
